Abstract

The aim of the present study is to examine the issue of masculine domination in Fadhma Aïth Mansour Amrouche’s Histoire de ma vie (1946) and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850) to highlight the harsh reality in which women lived and how they were marginalised and oppressed in the Kabylian and American societies in the seventeenth century. To reach our aim, we have learned on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory Masculine Domination (1998) where he used Kabyle society as an example of an oppressive patriarchal society. In the first chapter, we illustrated women oppression within the Kabyle society, then we shed light on the harshness and oppression that women faced within the puritan community especially Hester Prynne for committing adultery. Finally, in the second and last chapter we shed light on how these women rebelled against the patriarchal regimes of their societies. As a conclusion, we have deduced that the two writers shared the same views, despite their different backgrounds and periods of life.
