Abstract
The present dissertation revolves around the issue of hybridity and the quest for cultural identity in Ama Ata Aidoo’s play The Dilemma of a Ghost (1964). This work explores how the stage is used as a theatrical technique to deliver a message which raises post colonial issues in African societies. Moreover, we focus on the quest for cultural identity. To support our research, we rely on Stuart Hall’s approach to Cultural identity and Diaspora as depicted in his book Cultural Identity and Diaspora: Identity: Community, Culture, Difference (1990); likewise we rely on Homi Bhabha’s concepts of Hybridity, Mimicry and Third Space as portrayed in his Book The Location of Culture (1994). Thus, our research has shown that the play covers different forms of cultural identity; likewise, we have noticed the rise of hybridity and third space in cultural identities in the postindependent era.
