Abstract
This dissertation deals with a comparative study between Tennessee Williams The Night of
the Iguana (1961) and Malika Mokeddem La Nuit de la Lézarde (1998). Our main interest in
this research is to show that the above cited works are akin for their representation of
repressed characters who are inwardly tormented. Therefore, we have borrowed some
concepts of Sigmund Freud’s theory on repressed desires. Throughout our study of the two
works, we have reached the conclusion that, both Williams and Mokeddem lived in the same
repressive conditions which make them produce the same literary productions which is
characterized by repressive characters. We have divided our work into two parts. The first
part deals with the issue of Sexual repression in both The Night of the Iguana and La Nuit de
la Lézarde, whereas the second part discusses the two authors’ use of symbols that best
reinforce the theme under study.
