The Université Mouloud Mammeri de Tizi Ouzou, founded in 1977, is a multidisciplinary public institution. It
today has more than 42,000 students, 2,083 teaching staff and 1,000 technical and administrative personnel, spread over ten faculties:
- Construction engineering
- Letters and languages
- Biological and agronomic sciences
- Law and Political Science
- Sciences
- Management and Business Sciences
- Medicine
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Human and social sciences.

The University currently has some thirty research laboratories, accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, covering several fields:

- Society-Education-Labor, Analysis & Modeling of Random Phenomena,
- Development and teaching of the Amazigh language,
- Analytical Biochemistry & Biotechnology,
- Production Systems Design and Control and many others.
The Université Mouloud Mammeri has undertaken major structuring work to ensure that its research is in line with national and international competition, creating a dynamic that is conducive to its growth and influence. Widely open to its socio-economic environment, the Université Mouloud Mammeri has never ceased its efforts to encourage sustainable development and meet the challenges of globalization. Closer ties between the university and the local and national economic sector are now an objective reality, a challenge, a strategy for the Université Mouloud Mammeri to implement promising projects. Several framework agreements have been signed with national companies. The University's desire to open up to the world has resulted in the signing of several cooperation agreements with universities in several countries (France, Italy, Russia, Spain, Romania, Canada, Ukraine, Tunisia, Morocco, etc.). These agreements are designed to facilitate scientific exchanges and the mobility of teaching researchers, students and university staff. The university aims to build bridges for exchanges of experience and skills, but also to improve teaching methods, boost scientific research and build a solid, long-term cooperation network. The Université Mouloud Mammeri de Tizi Ouzou takes part in a number of university exchange programs, including the European scholarship program, the "Entre les lignes -between the lines" program, the scholarship program in the Russian Federation and others.
